The Met exhibition Global by Design Book launch

Client  Jorge Welsh Research & Publishing   2016

This Editorial Design Catalogue was commissioned by Jorge Welsh R&P, for the exhibition by the same name at The Met NY. With a focus on Chinese ceramics from the 16—18th c., the catalogue comprises exquisite pieces from an important collection never exhibited before. Challenging a tradition of cataloguing Chinese ceramics as trade items, the catalogue focus on designs that reflect exchanges between China, the Islamic world and the Western culture during the late 16th c., when ceramics became a global luxury.

The challenge consisted in relocating these works of Art from a traditional historical context to a contemporary design environment where a wider target audience can acknowledge the importance of the concepts of “globalization” and “design” already in motion around the 16—18th c.
The overall feeling conveyed in the editorial design of the catalogue shows an effort in balancing the simplicity of layout and light background colours with the visually rich designs of the ceramics so often used nowadays as graphic motifs.
